Royal Oxen Prediction: This year, the Lord of the Royal Ploughing Ceremony drew a cloth measuring 5 khuep. The royal oxen consumed "liquor, water, and grass," predicting that...

On the day of the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, predictions are made regarding the abundance of the nation’s crops and food supplies.

The Lord of the Plough made a solemn vow and drew a ceremonial cloth for attire, with each cloth carrying a different meaning.

There are 3 patterned cloths as follows: if a 4-kueb cloth is drawn, it is predicted that rainfall will be slightly high. Upland fields will yield very well, while lowland fields may suffer some damage and produce less than full potential.

If a 5-kueb cloth is drawn, it is predicted that this year’s water supply will be adequate. Rice seedlings in the fields will yield abundantly, and fruits and meat supplies will also be plentiful.

If a 6-kueb cloth is drawn, it is predicted that water will be scarce. Lowland fields will yield well, but upland fields may suffer some damage and not reach full productivity.

In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has a systematic water management plan for both irrigated and non-irrigated areas, for appropriate domestic use and consumption, in order to mitigate potential water shortages during the dry season.

On this occasion, Mr. Aphai Sutthisang, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, presented the prediction report on the Lord of the Plough’s cloth divination and the sacred oxen’s food selection.

In addition, Brahmins conduct divination using 7 types of food offered to the sacred oxen.

Whichever item the sacred oxen eat, the royal astrologers provide the prediction: if the sacred oxen eat rice or corn, it is predicted that grains and fruits will be abundant.

If the sacred oxen eat mung beans or sesame, it is predicted that fruits and food crops will be plentiful. If the sacred oxen drink water or eat grass, it is predicted that water resources will be reasonably abundant, and grains, fruits, food crops, and meat will all be plentiful.

And if the sacred oxen drink liquor, it is predicted that transportation will improve, international trade will increase, and the economy will prosper.

This year, in the Royal Ploughing Ceremony 2024, the divination results from the 7 offered items for the sacred oxen Por and Piang showed that the sacred oxen consumed water, grass, and liquor.

Meanwhile, the Lord of the Plough drew a 5-kueb cloth, predicting that this year’s water supply will be adequate, rice seedlings in the fields will yield abundantly, and fruits and meat supplies will be plentiful.
