On the day of the Royal Ploughing Ceremony, predictions are made about the abundance of the nation's crops.
The Ploughing Lord makes a solemn vow and draws by chance one of the ceremonial cloths to wear, each of which carries a different meaning.
There are three patterned cloths: drawing the 4-span cloth foretells that water will be somewhat plentiful — paddies on high ground will yield well, while paddies in low-lying areas may suffer some damage and not yield fully.
Drawing the 5-span cloth foretells that this year's water will be just right — the rice seedlings in the paddies will yield abundantly, and crops and livestock will be plentiful.
Drawing the 6-span cloth foretells that water will be scarce — paddies in low-lying areas will yield well, but paddies on high ground will suffer some damage and not yield fully.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has a systematic water management plan, both within and outside irrigated zones, for appropriate consumption and use, to ease potential water shortages during the dry season.
On this occasion, Mr. Aphai Sutthisang, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, presented the report on the prediction from the Ploughing Lord's cloth and the feeding of the sacred oxen.
In addition, the Brahmins make predictions from seven kinds of food set out to feed the sacred oxen.
Depending on which the oxen eat, the royal astrologer gives the prediction: if the oxen eat rice or corn, it foretells that grain and crops will be plentiful.
If the oxen eat green beans or sesame, it foretells that crops and food will be abundant. If the oxen drink water or eat grass, it foretells that water will be reasonably plentiful, and grain, crops, food and livestock will be abundant.
And if the oxen drink liquor, it foretells that transport will be smoother and foreign trade will improve, bringing a flourishing economy.
This year, the result of the sacred oxen's choice among the seven foods at the 2024 Royal Ploughing Ceremony was that the oxen took water, grass, and liquor.
Meanwhile, the Ploughing Lord drew the 5-span cloth, foretelling that this year's water will be just right, the rice seedlings will yield abundantly, and crops and livestock will be plentiful.
The Ploughing Lord drew the 5-span cloth.
